Fractions with pizza, paper and chocolate

Three everyday activities that make fractions click before pupils work on paper.

Fractions get easier when children can first see and touch the parts. Start with things you already have at home or in class.

1. Fold a sheet of paper Fold an A4 sheet in half: two halves. Fold again: four quarters. Let the child colour 3/4 and say what is left.

2. Share a pizza or pancake Cut it into 8 slices. Ask: "If you eat 2 slices, what fraction have you eaten?" Answer: 2/8, which is 1/4.

3. Compare with chocolate A chocolate bar with 12 squares shows that 1/2, 2/4 and 6/12 are the same amount.

Then on paper - Start with halves, quarters and thirds - Draw first, then calculate - Ten minutes is enough
