Better reading comprehension with five questions
Five simple questions to ask after every text – they work from Year 1 to Year 6.
Reading comprehension grows best by talking about the text afterwards. Ask the same five questions every time so they become a habit.
The five questions 1. Who is the text about? 2. Where and when does it happen? 3. What is the problem? 4. How is it solved? 5. What do you think happens next?
Tips - Let the child answer out loud first, then in writing - Ask the child to point to where the answer is in the text - Question 5 has no right answer – it trains inference
Link it to writing Let the child write two sentences that continue the story. That practises both reading and handwriting.
Print handwriting lines, make a word search with words from the text or practise on screen.
