How children learn the times tables – without nagging
Five short habits that make times-table practice easier, from patterns to ten minutes a day.
The times tables are one of the most important foundations in maths. Here are five habits that work.
1. Start with patterns
The 2, 5 and 10 tables follow clear patterns. Once pupils see the pattern, they stop guessing.
2. A little every day
Ten minutes a day beats one hour once a week.
3. Flip the fact
If 3 × 7 = 21, then 7 × 3 = 21 too. That halves the facts to learn.
4. Mix spoken and written
- Say the table out loud
- Do a short worksheet
- Practise on screen
5. Celebrate progress
Tick off the tables they know. It keeps motivation up.
