Percentage worksheets
Percent means hundredths. 25% of 80 is 0.25 × 80 = 20. Once pupils use decimals, discounts and interest become simple.
How to make the worksheet
Pick a task type in the percentage generator. There is a separate one for interest and loans.
Three ways to calculate percent
1. Via 10%: 10% of 340 is 34, so 30% is 3 × 34 = 102. 2. Via fractions: 25% = 1/4, 50% = 1/2, 20% = 1/5. 3. Via decimals: 15% of 80 = 0.15 × 80 = 12. Start with 10% and 50% — they go a long way in everyday life.
Worked example step by step
A jacket costs 600 and is reduced by 25%. The discount is 600 ÷ 4 = 150, new price 450. Faster: pay 75%, so 0.75 × 600 = 450. Percentage change: from 450 to 540 the increase is 90, and 90 / 450 = 0.20 = 20%.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Common mistake: thinking a 20% rise followed by a 20% cut returns the start price. 100 → 120 → 96 — the cut is taken from the new, bigger amount. Another is dividing by the wrong number for a change: always divide by the original value.
What suits which grade?
Grade 6: percent as hundredths, 10%, 25% and 50% of amounts. Grade 7: percent of, proportion and discounts. Grade 8: percentage change and multipliers. Grade 9: interest, repeated change and percentage points.
